Shiny and bright

THE ILLUSTRATED CITY No.2

EVERYWHERE, OUR HEARTS ARE SHINING

The extra bonus of traveling at this time of the year was seeing

Paris and London lit up and shiny with Holiday Decorations.

Here are my pictures of favorite Holiday set ups from each city...

PARIS/ MERCI / 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais 75003 Paris

The city of lights was adorned with even more lights, star shaped and dangling overhead in the streets. The Merci boutique is offset in a courtyard from the main street, so when you enter it's like coming into a tiny winter wonderland of frosty white trees and a bright red car.

THE HOLIDAY TRIMMINGS...

Merci stocks amazing fashion labels mixed with beauty, home furnishings, books and objects on three huge floors. It's a lot to browse through, then comes the task of choosing which spot to eat in - either their cafe next door, the one on the lower level or the library spot. Being surrounded by floor to ceiling dark wood paneled bookshelves couldn't be better, so we picked the library. When we were in Paris, I ordered this dish in three different places and Merci had the best one:

Runny soft boiled eggs served with thin slices of toasted bread and salted butter. "Oeufs à la coque" on the menu or as I know them in a silly way as "Soldiers and Eggs" or "Dippy Eggs." Dipping that glorious bread into the egg yolks, it is the ultimate cold weather comfort dish. Really though, I could eat this everyday.

But only in Paris, because of that French butter. Fuel for all of the wandering you'll be doing in the Marais (coming soon in an ILLUSTRATED CITY post)...

LONDON /CLARIDGE'S LANVIN CHRISTMAS TREE/ 49 Brook Street W1K 4HR London

Instead of a star, it's an Alber Elbaz doll topping the tree, complete with glasses and a bowtie. How could this not be the best tree that you've ever seen. Wishing that there could be as many of those robins egg blue Lanvin shoe boxes under my tree.

THE HOLIDAY TRIMMINGS...

Walking though the Claridges lobby sitting room is so beautiful with it's pale yellow walls and black and white checkered floors. Have a drink at the black curved art deco bar. It'll give you some extra warmth while you walk around outside, the hotel is right around the corner from Savile Row, where you can take a peek into all of the refined windows of the Old Tailoring Shops.
