THE ILLUSTRATED CITY No. 11 NEW YORK: AS YOU IMAGINE IT TO BE

"Chapter One. He was as tough and romantic as the city he loved... New York was his town, and it always would be."

Fun fact, I used to play the clarinet when I was younger. So there is a soft spot in my heart for Woody Allen when it is told that he would rather play the clarinet with his ragtime jazz band or watch basketball than be at the Academy Awards. Reasons to further adore this man would be his ability to make any standard sit down interview something comical yet insightful, the all-time greatness of Annie Hall and the more recent favorite Midnight in Paris.

I wanted to give Andrew something for his birthday that would mean more than a physical object or a piece of fancy clothing. Something great, like if I could take this city we met in and wrap it in a box. So I got us an evening at The Carlyle hotel to see Woody Allen performing with The Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. We got dressed up and sitting under the painted murals of Marcel Vertès like in Hannah and Her Sisters, it was amazing. We took a couple of videos of the performance and set it up on youtube, which you can watch here and here.

There was even a flourish of the Gershwin tune from Manhattan played on the piano and it felt very New York, just like in the movies.     Woody Allen & The Eddy Davis Jazz Band / Every Monday until June at The Carlyle Hotel / 35 East 76th Street, New York, NY, 10021 / (212) 744-1600
