You know the photograph. The one of Joan Didion in a long sleeved knit dress, leaning against a Corvette Stingray. I’ve always wanted to give that kind of simple shaped dress a try, but it wasn’t until I got pregnant that I finally got around to it.

Throughout pregnancy, the only “official” maternity clothes I got were in the form of leggings. Most maternity brands I looked at were too expensive for what they were. Instead, I looked into styles from my favorite brands during the winter sales that could also work as maternity wear.

With just a pair of slides or flat backless loafers, a straight bodied long knit dress has become my go-to these days but I know I’ll be keeping this style in my rotation even after pregnancy. I got two for special occasions and two for everyday wear, which has been a good little set to have:

Lemaire Wool Dress

For dress up occasions I got this, the same one pictured above in red, but in dark green. I especially love the midi length, it is perfect.

DÔEN Anka Dress

DÔEN's  website is so beautifully branded, it makes me want all of their clothes. This creme colored dress was my first purchase from this online shop and I am super pleased, I love it.

Helmut Lang Long Cashmere Dress

Similar to the Lemaire dress, I went with this in black for basic everyday wear. It is also midi length but has longer sleeves, perfect for keeping warm.

COS Long Slim Fit Dress

COS always has great casual basics at a good price. Their clothes in general are very maternity friendly and I found a nice soft cotton jersey version of the long dress here.
